Mass Effect: Andromeda First Contact
Last night was my Mass Effect: Andromeda First Contact. I was able to get on and play for a few hours. Enough time for me to formulate a fair opinion about the controls, graphics and the opening story line.
Let’s begin with the sound and graphics. Though not as visually stunning as other titles that I have played recently, I would still give this game a 4 controller rating on the artwork. Attention to detail is superb, even if some of the facial expressions are a bit off. If I have learned nothing in the last month of gaming it is the face is a very difficult thing to animate. Especially when it comes to speech and synchronizing the perfect lip movement. Which brings me to the sound, fantastic! I can’t say enough about the immersion into the Andromeda galaxy because of the sounds surrounding my character (Horatio Ryder). From the explosions, which were not to crazy loud to hurt my ears, while still able to listen to the conversations at a comfortable level, to the noise my character’s clothes make as he navigates the Hyperion, the sounds are bang on.
The controls are a different beast all together. Just coming out of HZD, I find the controls to be a bit cumbersome. Horatio continues to run forward for quite some time after I let go of the control, something that has almost gotten me killed a few times. I find the recoil on the assault rifle to be quite aggressive, which yes it should be, but this is a bit too much for my liking. In saying all of the that the transition between run, walk, jump and float feel good and Horatio loves to climb ledges on his own. Especially when I miss a jump by just a hair, he grabs on giving me a chance to recover. Going to give it a 2.5 controller rating in the controls department. I am hoping the controls become more natural to me the longer I play and I get the chance to upgrade this section!
That brings me to the story line. On the grand scale I am a sucker for the human race travelling to a new Galaxy to save, expand, repopulate the human race. I will literally watch/play anything I can get my hands on in this genre. I like a few of the twists that Mass Effect has brought to the table. 2 million light years in 600 years of cryo-sleep. Man my muscles must have been sore! It’s a hell of a long ride on auto pilot (just as the crew of the Passengers ship). I an intrigued to see where my sister comes into things and how the relationship with the aliens (yet to be named in my journey) turns out. In the few short hours that I have played the story has drawn me in enough to keep me wanting more. I am sitting here at my desk yearning to find out more! Story gets a 5 controller rating!
Overall I give it 4/5 rating, making it a game definitely worth grabbing if you are in the Sci-Fi adventure games!
