Horizon Zero Dawn Review
SPINE TINGLING AMAZING…
RPG Rating (Out of 5)
Seriously though, I was able to hop on for just over an hour this morning and stream the opening game play of Horizon Zero Dawn.
*Spoilers may follow*
Starting out with the opening cinematic there is no doubt in my mind that Guerrila Games put heart and soul into this game. In a world where technology old and new are expected to co-exist seamlessly the artists had quite the challenge on their hands. From what I have seen so far they have done it. The art in this title is amazing. Every detail of the landscape intricately interlaced with the next. If there was one thing that I could pick on, it would be the synchronization of the characters lips to their speech. I probably only noticed this due to the fact that there are a lot of cinematics in the first hour.
I love the opening interactive sequence, where you play as a adolescent Aloy exploring the “old world”. “Meeting” the past and the secrets it holds… meeting Aloy and learning her personality. You will learn later on that you have some control over who she will become, but the story tellers do a great job of letting you know who they think she should be right from the get go. I felt the tutorial was short and sweet. Just enough to let you know how to use the various aspects of the character without boring the shit out of you with trial after trial.
Moving beyond the introduction and into the first taste of the open world…
You are tasked with preparing for a coming of age/warrior ritual called the “Proving”. I have not yet made it to the Proving, but I can’t wait to get there. This morning I was taking my time to explore the small piece of the world that was revealed to me. Taking on some side missions, learning about the clans and the people who the story is based upon.
The fighting controls felt so good! Seamlessly switching between long-range and melee. After coming for a FPS the aim assist is amazingly high… not sure how I feel about this yet, but it made this mornings hunting fun (poor little rabbits). Traveling was a bit long, but if I understand the story you will eventually be able to “tame” the Mechs or something like that, so I will hold off on judgement of this for a bit.
Crafting… not something that I like doing in any game, but so far I am not put off by having to do it. The gathering of the resources to craft is quick, you don’t have to repeatedly hammer a button to collect, just a quick press of the button and boom you got it. The option to collect only certain things from your kills is nice too, that way when you are maxed out on a particular resource you don’t have to take it.
So I stand by my first statement so far and I can’t wait to get into the rest of the game.
