The World of Final Fantasy demo dropped on Monday and I figured I would take a stroll through the content, not really sure how I was going to feel about it, since I didn’t know too much in the first place.

When you drop into the demo you are set on a very linear path towards the end of the dungeon.  Forget side quests, world map exploring or any of that, its a straight shot from point A to point B with a few deviations where you can meet some key people.  Unfortunately, none of these people will join your party.  The demo does a pretty decent job of giving you the run through of all the control functions, and gives you a little bit into how stacks work.  For those of you wondering, stacks are important, they are a character/monster battle combination which is determined by the mode you have your main characters in.  They have the option of Jiant, which resembles a typical Kingdom hearts type teenage character, or lilikin, which would be a direct chibi model.  Each has their own unique style and ability to pair up with different types of monsters.  If you play Jiant, you can only stack with medium size and small monsters, if you play Lilikin you can stack with large and small monsters, gaining access to a whole new set of fun and intense abilities.  Also if you are wondering how to get monsters, it’s very much like pokemon, some monsters you only need to lower in health to obtain, some monsters have other conditions, like healing them or using fire spells and the such.

I’ve been playing the demo for a week now and I keep going back, the greatest part is that you can just keep catching things, even the final boss which seems to be a form of Ifrit.  The small things keep this game cute and lovable.  The span of characters from different FF games make it a real joy to search each nook and cranny, and the return of amazing yet infuriating enemies that you can turn to your side really completes the package.  One of the more entertaining parts of the battle system is the little call outs to old games like Chrono Trigger with dual abilities, Cross Slash shows up as a dual ability between the main character and a behemoth.  The characters from other FF games show up as summon types, one of note is Tidus who shows up to perform his Blitz ball strike pull directly from his FFX final overdrive.

While this demo doesn’t offer much in the way of story, it does offer enough to get you interested in the game and really pull you into the experience.  As a final Fantasy fan, if you ever wanted to know how awesome it is to ride a behemoth through the dungeon map, you’ll get to know, and seriously, there is no greater glory in the world… not even seeing your first child being born.  So do yourself a favor and download this puppy, after you get hooked make sure you pick it up at your local game shop since it releases today, something with this much spunk and creativity deserves a good try.
