A Tale of Dark Horror and Desperation
A Tale of Dark Horror and Desperation
“A Haunting: Witching Hour”
It’s not every day that I’m stricken with intrigue of a game as I am with Enyx Studios upcoming PSVR title, “A Haunting: Witching Hour”. I recently had an in-depth interview with the CEO of Enyx Studios, Don Hileman, not only about the game but also about the game developer as well. Set to be released in the fall of 2016, Enyx Studios describes “A Haunting” as a storytelling video game of dark horror and desperate survival.
The game’s story takes place in the summer of 2015, as a team of five Indie film makers intend to make a documentary about the dark past occurrences of the fictional town of Shady Hollow. These occurrences all seem to stem back to the town’s urban legend of the Hollow Creek Witch. Back in 1692, the townsfolk of Shady Hollow hung a woman, Elizabeth Ainsley, for being involved in witchcraft. As she swung from the gallows, her dying words act as a prelude to terror and “would haunt the town forever”.
The game’s playable character, Eddie, is one of the crew members from the 2015 Indie film team. He is a mysterious person with the ability to see into the past and the future by simply touching certain objects within the game; a gift of which he has been tormented by all of his life. As described by Don Hileman, “Eddie is a character with a bit of a troubled past. Without giving away too much, Eddie is found hurt along an empty road and brought in for questioning as to the whereabouts of the rest of his team.” Furthermore, Don adds, “As the player moves through the game, there will be areas that they can touch and it will flash them back to something that happened in the past, such as when Elizabeth Ainsley was hung or gives them a glimpse of something that is going to happen in the future. This will allow us to tell a much deeper story because one minute you may be in the woods, and then the next you are at the hanging site seeing Elizabeth being accused and hung for being a witch.”
Enyx Studios, formerly known as iPlay Studios, has had “A Haunting: Witching Hour” in development since the fourth quarter of 2015. When asked about the platforms that we can expect to see
the game on Mr. Hileman stated, “We are initially going to launch “A haunting: Witching Hour” on PlayStation VR, but we are looking into creating an Oculus and HTC Vive edition as well. We also plan on developing a Virtual Reality version for the next Xbox one which will support the Oculus Rift.” Don goes on to state that they are working towards a PC version as well. With the PC version, Enyx Studios is looking to utilize the use of a PrioVR suit. A PrioVR suit is a suit mimics and brings the player and his/her movements into the virtual world and its environments. When asked about the utilization of the PrioVR, Don Stated, “We plan on utilizing PrioVR for the PC version. If it works with the PS4, we will be looking at incorporating it into the PS4 version as well. PrioVR is such a suit and adds a whole new level of immersion which is what we are looking to bring with A Haunting.”
With VR headsets, there is always a concern with the safety of the gamer playing the game from having to stand up and walk around whilst gaming. When asked about these concerns, Don
replied, “Although standing up and moving around is amazing with VR, there is always the potential of someone getting hurt as well as there are some people who cannot stand for long periods of time. We want to make sure everyone can play and enjoy A Haunting.” In this game, the player is able to simply sit and be able to make the gestures of movement in order to move his/her playable character, Eddie, around in the game’s virtual environment.
Enyx Studios is based in Youngstown, OH. The current team at Enyx Studios include: Don Hileman as CEO/Art
Creator, Alex Puncekar who is the Writer, Noah Johnson as Lead Developer, and Mitch Foster as Audio Engineer. “A Haunting: Witching Hour” has received the ESRB rating of “M” for mature.
