We have become a nation of sitters. Most of us sit all day at work. We sit in our cars on our way to and from work. We sit and binge watch 13 episodes in a row of something amazing on Netflix. We sit while we play our favorite video games.

Okay, you get it. We sit way too much! This can cause some seriously yucky things to happen to us including weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, increased risk for heart disease and cancer, just to name a few. Yikes!

But, did you know that just by standing up and moving around for a couple of minutes every hour we can throw down some serious combat on the negative effects from all that sitting we do? Even if you’re an avid gym goer you still need to make this part of your day. Personally, I start to go nuts if I miss my stand up and move time while I’m at the office. I can get irritated; my back will begin to hurt; my eyes get really tired of staring at my monitor.

When I get up every hour and walk around it makes me feel energized, happy, better focused and accomplished in the fact that I’m doing something good for ME!

I’ve found that the best intentions can be hard to keep up with without the right tools though. Thanks to some great apps, I can stay on track with this very important activity. My favorite app is “Stand Up!“. I love it. You can set it for any day of the week plus the times of the day and frequency you want it to alert you to stand up. There are a bunch of different alert sounds to choose from. I usually pick a fun one that lasts a few seconds to really drive the impact home that it’s time now!

If you happen to have a wearable fitness device such as an Apple Watch, Fitbit® or other product, many have features that will remind you to stand up as well. For me, my Apple Watch will remind me at the 50th minute of every hour to stand if it hasn’t yet registered that I’ve done so. However, I still use my Stand Up! app because I find it to be a little more motivating.

Bottom line… Find a way that works for you to get yourself up and moving throughout the day. You are your number one avatar and you must remember to level yourself up too! This is a great way to do it. With that said, I gotta stand up!
