As if we had any doubt, John Bernthal is back as the Punisher but with his own stand alone series.

It looks like Netflix has ordered up a first season of Punisher after the stellar performance we saw in Daredevil season 2.  So far we don’t know many details about the series, just the return of Bernthal and that Steve Lightfoot the executive producer of Hannibal will be joining this series in the same capacity.  If you have seen Hannibal, you know that Lightfoot has a penchant for great storytelling and this feels like the perfect fit.

It seems that Netflix had early plans in January for a spin-off but it wasn’t until Bernthal’s break out performance in March, that both the fans and the producers felt this would be a solid series to run.  “For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”  It seems that all of us are interested in diving deeper into Frank Castle’s story and this is nothing but good news.

This marks the sixth Netflix Marvel series to be added to the line up with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.  Who knows, maybe with more of these gritty street level heroes making their way to Netflix, we might get to see more in the future (Ghost Rider and Moon Knight please!).
